First off, I too was part of athletic programs in my youth and through varsity in High School...being an athlete doesn't validate you, me or anyone.  Nor does not being an athlete invalidate you.  A statistics professional may know everything that's ever happened in sports by studying sports but never actually setting foot on a field.
