UCANN'T... err UCONN with a heartbreaker today. Granted, they didn't play well at all and were playing from behind all game, it's always a much tougher loss when it's a last second shot by the under dog to win. Don't feel too bad Huskies, happened to Drake too. But I have W. KY beating UCONN in the second round anyways so this just helps me out that much more. For the past several years it's always been the 5 vs 12 and 4 vs 13 seeds that have provided the most upsets the first round. Why should this year be any different? We're off to another great year of March Madness. I'm 20/24 so far which isn't so bad. How are you doing in your bracket?

The HE15MAN Trophy

As you can tell, I write with a slight bias about this subject as an avid Gator (not to be confused with the weak ass smack of Gaytor) fan. But even as I may be biased, stats (not selective stats either) are facts. Ignoring the facts is making a decision based on your opinion.
While this award is opinion of voters, I find it disgusting that ESPN somehow can control where votes go for the winner. ESPN has too much control and is more bias than I will ever be about sports. I can actually open my mind and open myself to think from an outside view.
Chase Daniels is a great player and a great QB and should be a finalist for the trophy. DMAC is a great player and a great RB and should be a finalist for the trophy. Tim Tebow is better though. And here's why...
Chase Daniels has put up great numbers, no doubt. But he has also put it up against some pretty weak defenses. He plays a style offense that allows him to put those kind of passing yards and TD's up very easily. Not taking anything away from him but it's the same situation with Colt Brennan. If numbers and stats are everything, let's give it to Colt Brennan. Ahhh, but we don't. Why is that? Also, and probably the most important part here, Daniels failed his team against OU in the conference championship recently. With absolutely a no show in the game and couldn't even get a passing TD.
DMAC, while having better stats this year than he did last year, isn't the best player in college football. His inconsistency has caused his team to lose games because of his yards, or lack thereof. Tim Tebow while not winning every game and losing 3, his stats were consistent and the losses were clearly nothing he could control (in 2 of the losses). The defense was young and let the team drive at the end and put it away.
There's only so much superman can do with 30 seconds on the clock.
Not only did Tebow put up monsterous numbers and create some phenomenal records, he put himself in a league of his own with 20+ rushing and passing TD's. He was also one of the top rushing TD leaders and he's a QB! A QB PEOPLE!
A lot of people said that if he doesn't win it, it will be because of the Sophomore thing which is complete BS. Age shouldn't have anything to do with it. You either are the best player in college football or you aren't. Age doesn't matter when looking at skill and greatness.
Call me a homer, call me what you will but you better actually make an intelligent argument because I'm tired of discussing this with complete rejects.

Herschel Walker vs Steve Spurrier - Heavyweight Bout

Not sure how many of you are aware about the comment Spurrier made about sending some third string guys out after UGA's endzone celebration against the Gators but apparently it made Herschel Walker angry. I don't think we would like it when Walker is angry.
Walker's response:
“Well, you know, is that not insulting? That’s totally insulting for a coach of his stature to say something so stupid,” said Walker. “So my question I say to him is, if he’s got that much guts, why don’t he step in a ring against me? You don’t say something that silly, because you’re going to get somebody hurt. Georgia was punished, because that’s a penalty. They didn’t go out to hurt anyone. [Spurrier] talks about hurting somebody. How much guts do you have? Step in a ring with me, and then we’ll see.”
C'mon Herschel, he did it jokingly. You don't think he would have actually done that at the time do you? Don't have a stroke over it. It was done jokingly. And is it really worse than orchestrating a display of unsportsmanlike conduct? He said it half-hazzardly and you get your panties in a wad.
Chill out Herschel. Go home and rub your heisman and be happy that you are a big enough star so no one (besides me) will make fun of you for this. If you have an issue, grab a tissue.

The Heisman - It's not a team award

The Heisman Memorial Trophy Award (often known simply as the Heisman Trophy or The Heisman), named after former college football player and coach John Heisman, is awarded annually to the most outstanding collegiate football player in the U.S. Although not the only award honoring the best player in college football, it is considered the most prestigious individual player honor in American college football. It is awarded in December before the postseason bowl games. Source: WikipediaThat being said, the Heisman Trophy is clearly stated an award for the most outstanding player. Not the most outstanding player for the most outstanding team. So why does it seem like you have to be part of the best team in college to win?I say this because Tim Tebow should be the front runner of the Heisman. They have Dixon as the front runner but let's look at some of the stats between the two quarterbacks:
Tebow: 3250 total yards, 42 TDs
Dixon: 2623 total yards, 28 TDsNow, I'm not too knowledgeable on common sense but those stats alone should show that Tebow should be ahead of Dixon. Last time I checked (just a couple minutes ago) the heisman goes to the most outstanding individual player. It shouldn't matter on how many losses a team has. It's unfortunate as Dixon is the only major candidate from the west, so he will most likely get all the west votes and the east will be split up amongst the other candidates. I'm open for arguments but why is Dixon more of a likely choice to win than Tebow? Stats don't lie but it seems that a team mentality has been put into the heisman award when it has no place sticking it's nose into it. If you don't think Tebow should win the heisman, let's hear some reasons, not just "he shouldn't". That's not a strong statement. Show some reasons that Dixon should win it over him and don't use because Oregon is ranked better as it's clearly stated it's an individual award, not a team award.

The dreams and visions of Ohio State have been zooked two years in a row. Two years you ask? Well Meyer's team was all Zook's recruits. So two years, Ron Zook has been the brick wall that Ohio State seems to be unable to surpass.9th time this year an unranked team has beaten a top 5 team. First time it's happened to the number one team. This has set a NCAA record. People have stated all year that the Buckeyes would lose to the first decent team they play. Will be interesting to see what happens with Mich vs OSU here soon. Either way, the buckeyes are prefect no more. Their season has been tainted with a loss this evening and most likely their hopes of a championship have been depleted as well. Illinois' first victory over a number one team since 1956.OSU was only allowing around 60 yards rushing and Illinois was able to double it. Is OSU overrated or is Illinois under rated? I think you could attribute a little to both. Zook has brought this Illinois team up and will have them contending in the Big 10 (plus one) for a while now. Either way, Buckeyes have been ZOOKED.Congrats Illinois on a much deserved win!

NCAA's Illegitimate Love Child (AKA BCS)

Would you get rid of your own kid if it wasn't performing up to the expectations you thought it would? Probably not. So asking the NCAA to do this to their baby would be wrong would it not? Obviously that's a little stretch in comparison but it seems to be the reality of things. The argument is change the BCS, it doesn't work. Put in a new system, anything but the BCS. This is where I stray from that line of thinking.
Let's not make a new system, let's just make the BCS better. Everyone talks about a playoff system. Is that really what you want? Isn't the no playoffs what make college football exciting? In this writers opinion, college football is better than other sports because of the mere fact that it doesn't have the traditional playoff scheme that everything else has. It's unique and that's what makes it the controversial topic of college football.
Let's not scrap it and come up with something new. Let's take this already good foundation and build it upon it. Like the "We don't make the computers you work with, we make the computers you work with faster". I think this approach would be a much better approach to the changing of the BCS.
Let's add another factor into the BCS. Why not let the nation vote on this? Afterall, they're the one's who make college football. They're the major factor in why this sport is so exciting. Without them, NCAA football would be nothing. Take the recent Ole Miss game where there were a little over 27k in attendance. Don't let them vote on any team. Obviously, you would get homers that would vote their team #1 regardless. Make it so you could only vote a team up or down 2 spots from the coaches poll.
Controversy At End Of Season
Any time there would be a controversy at the end of a season, do a round robin where each of the teams in the controversial situation would play each other all once. Team with best record would take the National Championship. If it resulted in a three or two way tie, go to the national vote in conjuction with coaches and AP poll.
National Vote
This would rid the controversial #2 and #3 teams from having a hissy fit. You wouldn't need to make it so it counted as much but if the majority of the nation voted for #3 to be #2, there should be some say. Afterall, it's what the nation wants and would result in more people agreeing with the outcome. You could even restrict voting on your own teams if you wanted to.
Summary
That all being said, there's obviously flaws in the above method (as with any system besides a play off system - even then there would be controversy for the bubble teams) but there are ways to keep the BCS in effect and use it as the foundation but have other things in place for controversial season ending standings. If the BCS works out where it's clear who should be #1 and #2 and play for the title great, but have something there in case it doesn't work that way. Set standards on what would come into effect first and what holds more weight.
So discuss, debate, call me an idiot, do as you wish but let's hear some opinions besides a playoff.

How to trash talk?

This post spurred from a post on another site.

Everyone in that topic has good points. I'm new to that site but I think
I know a thing or two about trash talk. Trash talking isn't just saying
how you hate a team. The examples in the link above differentiate the
difference.

Boasting is cool but going over board isn't trash talk. It's showing
that you're a sore loser. Granted, when you win it's ok to boast about
it. Just don't take it over board.

Show respect to the other fans of the Greatest Conference in NCAA
Football (SEC for those of you that don't know). Respectful trash talk
is much more entertaining than hate talk. It can be done, it's not hard.

Not only do you make yourself look stupid if you just say nonsense in
your post. Trash talking consists of intelligent discussion. Trash
talking isn't just talking bad about the other team. A lot of times
just stating the stats and facts of a situation is the best smack talk
you can do. Saying a team is going to get spanked but not backing it up
makes you look stupid and other fans of that team dumb. You don't
represent just yourself. When you act like an idiot wearing whatever
jersey or sports apparel you're wearing, you are representing the
entire fan population. Someone visiting from out of town seeing you act
like an idiot just for a split second may very well be the only thing
they see while in town.

That being said, just be respectful in your posts. Back up what you're
saying with stats. It's ok to let personal opinion in but at least show
that you know what you're talking about and not just posting to stir up
trouble. A good opening post will bring a lot more intelligent
discussion to come. A poor post will just have a ton of responses of
people stating what an idiot you are and the point of the thread will
be lost. If you want others to agree with you, back it up.

Last but not least, don't attack the person. If you have to result to
attacking the person in your trash talking (IE: You [insert team] fans
are morons) you've already shown you can't discuss things in a mature
manner and no one will take you seriously. The second you do that,
you've lost you're argument. Hopefully you learned something about how to trash talk effectively and will keep it in mind next time you start laying on the smack talk.

College Top 10 11/3/07

I will be making top 10 picks each week for the college games with a little reasoning on why. Hopefully you will enjoy!Wisconsin #21 @ OSU #1 - Does Wisconsin still have OSU's number?Probably not. OSU while they haven't played any tough, tough games, do deserve their spot at the #1 position. Until they are tested, they will remain number one. Unfortunately, OSU won't be tested this week.WISC 17 - OSU 31FSU @ BC #2 - Matt Ryan looks to keep his heisman hopeful intact.A loss could really hurt Matt Ryan's shot at a heisman award this year. Too bad, it's not really in his hands. While FSU is definitely not a top notch team and BC is definitely an over rated #2 spot, there is just no way BC will take a hit this week. FSU 14 - BC 23LSU #3 @ Bama #17 - Saban Bowl is here!Unfortunately for LSU, they play a team that is hungry and in hopes of taking the SEC West. LSU has all their title hopes on the line here as a loss would take them out of the picture of being a Nat'l Championship contender.LSU 28 - Bama 34ASU #4 @ Oregon #5 - PAC 10 Collides! The battle of the PAC 10 has surfaced. Two title hopefuls battle it out ultimately eliminating one of them from a shot. This will be the game of the week right here and one to keep an eye on. While both teams still have a tough schedule to fill out, the winner of this game easily takes the rest of their games. In a close one...ASU 31 - Oregon 28TX A&M @ OK #6 - Upset waiting to happen!Oklahoma isn't as good as some people think and could very well lose this game. Would I bank on it? No. It will be a close game but OK will pull this one out.TX A&M 13 - OK 20Louisville @ WVU #7 - Big Easy... err EastCup cake conference here, no doubt about that. Louisville was supposed to be hot stuff and ended up showing no chance. However, WVU is not going to give this one up. While WVU is not as good as their ranking, they will not lose this one.Louisville 17 - WVU 34 Neb @ Kansas #8 - Farmers daughter tailgate parties.Nebraska has had a tough run of luck lately. Kansas is rated slightly higher than where they should be. Kansas will have a tough time playing this Corn Husker team.Neb 27 - KU 17Mizzou #9 @ Colorado - Who gets to wear the black jerseys?Colorado has already hit their peak with their upset early in the season. I can't see them beating another top team, they're just not good enough or consistent enough in their play. However, if they bring their A game, they can beat almost anyone... they just won't bring it this weekend.Mizzou 38 - Colorado 17Troy @ Georgia #10 - Let's storm the endzone again!Georgia coming off of a huge win last Saturday at the WLOCP (it is what it is people) will not let their momentum slow down here against a very weak Troy team. Troy 10 - Georgia 42 Well those are the picks, read 'em, talk about 'em, and feel free to comment about 'em.

First of all, I absolutely hate the Yankees. So that being said, I am absolutely ecstatic about A-Rod opting out of his contract. I'm sure my buddy on here (die-hard Yankee fan) is in complete disarray right now but I am loving it.Could this be from the recent Torre decision? Apparently not according to a statement from his agent: "Alex's decision was one based on not knowing what his closer,
his catcher and one of his statured pitchers was going to do,"
Boras said. "He really didn't want to make any decisions until he
knew what they were doing." Either way, it will be interesting to see what those players do. This could become a rebuilding era for the Yankees and the end of their era as the dominant baseball team. Torre, Rodriguez, who's next?I hope it takes a snowball effect personally.

So GA handed us our ass today in the WLOCP (Worlds largest outdoor cocktail party). Oh well, I guess the sun shines on a dogs ass every now and again. One thing I don't like is the fact that the Head Coach was the one that orchestrated the stomp to the endzone on the first score. It's a little different than the players doing it on their own. It looked as though he had planned that in practice. Uncalled for and definitely unsportsmanlike conduct. No class IMO.Either way, good game dawgs, you played well and beat us up and down the field, you deserved to win that game. So congrats Dawgs, live it up because you still won't win the SEC East.

Charlie Weis is the worst coach to ever don a headset.

Charlie Weis, oh how ye have failed. Is it possible for Notre Dame to be any more pathetic? The stat king is going to give you faithful readers some Notre Dame knowledge. Try not to throw up. The Fighting Irish are a dismal 1-7 so far this season, and they've lost 9 out of their last 10. Those 9 losses have come by an average of 24 points. I know what you might say a this point, but they have suffered an incredibly low amount of injuries so far, so count that out. Meanwhile, three of their opponents this season had to play Notre Dame with their backup quarterbacks, and 2 of those teams, USC and Michigan, still managed to beat ND by more points than either has beat any of their opponents this year. Let's talk about their only win this year, and maybe there'll be some light at the end of the tunnel. Nope. UCLA started their third-string walk-on quarterback, and Notre Dame only managed to win that game due to seven UCLA turnovers, 5 of those coming from the walk-on. The Irish only managed 140 total offensive yards that game.I figure you get the point by now, so I should stop. But I won't.Let's break down just how bad the Fighting Irish really are. There are 119 Division 1-A football teams in the NCAA. Notre Dame is 119th in total offense, 119th in rushing yards (currently 34 per game), 112th in passing offense, and 118th in scoring. Chew on this: if Notre Dame doubled their rushing yards per game, they would barely edge out Duke for 118th place, and if they doubled their scoring output, they'd still be 108th.The NCAA statistical archive only goes back to 1999. During that period, the lowest yards per carry comes by way of a pitiful 2001 Arizona State team that recorded 1.46 yards per carry. Notre Dame is averaging 1.09 yards per carry. What does that mean? The worst rushing offense in the last 9 years was still about 1/3 better than Notre Dame. Don't fret though, Notre Dame fans. You'll still have your undeserved Top Ten preseason ranking next year.

So it's that time of year again for the WLOCP (it is what is, screw you haters)So
it seems to be that time as well where all the GA fans start letting
their bulldog mouth over power their puppy dog ass. I guess people can
hope and dream. But it's been so long since they beat us that
when they have a masturbating problem, they paint their dicks orange
and blue because they ain't beat those colors in years.Seriously,
they had to hire Mike Vick to come coach next year, they think it will
be the only way to get the dogs fighting again. People keep
saying I'm crazy when I say FL wins this 42 to 20 but I don't see UGA
being able to contain our offense and Stafford will be his typical self
and give us some points as well. It's going to be a good thing
everyone's plastered before the game because the dawgs aren't going to
be too happy.

Its been a while, and there's much to talk about.

Ok fans and smack talkers, I know I haven't written a blog in a
few weeks but I have been preparing for my triumphant return to
Gainesville, Florida (a.k.a. the belly of the beast, for an Ohio State
fan like myself). But now that I'm here, I will be updating this blog
much more frequently. Also, you may have noticed a change in the look
of the website, and we hope you enjoy all the new features. Ok, enough
of that, onto the sports.

Wow, October has been quite hectic. The Steinbrenner family spit in
Joe Torre's face (metaphorically of course, but they might as well
have), almost every player on the Yankees next year may be still in
high school (with the possibility of losing almost every veteran player
on the team), A-Rod will get $30 million a year (weather in New
York or somewhere else), Ohio State is still undefeated (with a big
test coming tomorrow at Penn State), Chad Pennington still sucks, Vinny
Testeverde crawled out of a hole somewhere to play football again, and
the NBA season is starting (the Knicks have been matematically
eliminated from the playoffs until 2012 already by the way). So let's
get started.

The Yankees are absolutely out of control. Joe Torre is gone, and
his replacement is most likely going to be a guy with absolutely no
managerial experience, or a guy with one year experience in which he
finished somewhere around 15 games under .500. I think Joe
Torre had every right to leave and he made the right decision.
Furthermore, I don't believe it really had to do all that much with
money. If the Yankees offered him $10 million for one year, instead of
5 (even with the bull??? bonuses), he would have been right to turn it
down. You do not put a man with his resume (12 seasons, 12 playoff
appearences, 9 AL East tittles, 6 pennants, and 4 world series
victories) on essentially what was going to be a one year probation
period. It was a slap in the face and the Steinbrenners should be
ashamed of themselves. What the Yankee front office was trying to do
was save some face and make it look like Torre didn't want to come
back, rather than he was fired. Hey George, no one is falling for it.
I wish Torre the best of luck wherever he ends up, as he has said he's
not ready to retire and wants to persue other managing positions.

Brian Cashman (Jesus Christ he reminds me of a meerkat) has said the
Yankees will not persue A-Rod in the free agent market if he opts out
of his contract simply because the Yankees would lose the $21 million
the Rangers are paying the Yankees for A-Rod's contract. Are you
kidding me? Over $21 million? This is the same franchise that spent
$28 million to have the Crypt Keeper (a.k.a. Roger Clemens) come out of
retirement to give up homeruns to number 8 hitters. Mark my words,
when all is said and done, and A-Rod finally hangs up his spikes, he will
go down as the single greatest hitter to ever play the game. He has
played only half as long as Barry Bonds and he is already more than 2/3
of the way to the all-time carrer homerun record. A-Rod will shatter
that record, barring any serious injury of course, and in my opinion he
will hit somewhere around 900 carrer homeruns (putting the record far
out of reach, even for whatever steriod freak the MLB farm system pumps
out next). This is a guy who hit his 53rd homerun of the year off of
the ???ing roof of the dome in Toronto. That spot on the
roof was a staggering 115 feet above the field. Had there been no dome
in Toronto, I think that ball may have landed somewhere in
Philadelphia. That is God-Like. That is worth $30 million a year.
And lets not give all the credit to the bat, this guy has one hell of a
glove down there in the hot corner. And as far as everyone's obsession
with his playoff performance, when even one player on the Yankees has
an even somewhat decent postseason, than we can talk about A-Rod. After 2 games in the ALDS, the only
player on the team with 2 or more hits was Bobby Abreu (who looks as
though he might have been a hot dog eating champion in a past life, and
who closely resembles a cinnabon in my opinion) and he was a pitiful
2-for-6 with no RBI's, so get off of A-Rod's case please.

On to Ohio State and the sports miscarriage that is the BCS. Well,
THE Ohio State University is the #1 ranked team in the NCAA and they
have a big test this weekend in Happy Valley (and by the way Penn
State, Happy Valley? Really?). I realize that Penn State is ranked all
the way down at #25, but the Buckeyes have quite a dismal history
there. The Bucks are 1 of their last 4 in Happy Valley, and Penn State
was the last team to beat Ohio State, sparking a 28-game regular season
win streak for the Buckeyes. I just want to take this time to say
publicly that Joe Paterno scares the ???ing life out of me. I mean
the guy looks like he's old enough to have built a pyramid as a child,
but can snuff the life out of me at will. Jim Tressel is a tough guy,
but I would never want to have to look across the field into those
glaucoma-ridden eyes behind those 5-inch thick coke bottle glasses.
Good luck Jim, and don't look into his eyes, he'll turn you to stone.

Chad Pennington. Chad ???ing Pennington. I realize those of you
reading this can't see me, but I can't even type his name with a
straight face. He is a joke, as well as the entire Jets organization.
He spends more time on the turf than in the huddle, and he must be
color blind because it seems he can't differentiate between his
recievers' and the opponents' jerseys. As long as Chad Pennington
keeps up the Trent Dilfer impersonation, he will never be more than a
tackling dummy for 300 lb defensive linemen who have most definitely
eaten their chunky soup. Vinny Testeverde is back as well, and to be
completely honest, I didn't even know about it until about week 3.
Last I heard, he was bagging groceries at a supermarket somewhere,
still clinging to NFL pipe dreams and a bum knee. The phrase "don't
quit your day job" never seemed more appropriate.

NBA season is finally here, and quite frankly, who gives a ???? My
beloved Knicks haven't even played a regular season game yet and I'm
pretty sure they're already out of playoff contention. On top of that,
Isiah Thomas thinks he's Bill Clinton and it doesn't seem to be working
out much better for him. More on the basketball season as it trudges
onward at a painstaking pace like always.

I realize that was a little bit long, but pat yourself on the back
for getting through my ranting and raving. I promise I'll update more
often so as to not damage any of the smaller brains out there with long
periods of reading (I realize the booze kills enough brain cells as it
is).
